speaker john boehner on this? as you remember during the 2011 negotiations, they tried to get a grand bargain. a $4 trillion deficit reduction that would have included cuts to medicare and medicaid, but also some tax increases. ultimately that deal fell apart. there are some democrats that would like to see the president try to go big again in this second term. now the white house pardoned by some of the comments that john boehner made by saying that he's willing to come to the table to talk to the president about that. as you pointed out, he said that does not include tax increases for the wealthy. but i have been talking to some of my republican sources on the hill who say the speaker's language is important. it suggests a potential willingness to work with the president on the issue of taxes, which is of course the big sticking point. what does that mean? we don't know. it could mean eliminating deductions for big corporations for the wealthiest americans. those are the details that will have to be hammered out. but that report by the congressional budget office, which essentially

. a senior official is telling cnn details about general john allen's relationship with a socialite at the center of both investigations. this is a web of characters and connections that is impacting the team in charge of america's security. it is also delaying when the world will know who will be the next leader of nato. general john allen was to have a confirmation hearing this thursday on his way to becoming the supreme allied commander. that, of course, is now on hold while allen denied doing anything wrong, he is under investigation for potentially inappropriate e-mails he sent to this woman, jill kelley, the tampa socialite triggered the petraeus investigation. we'll get to exactly how in just a moment. the defense department's inspector general is going through e-mails allen and kelley sent to each other. >> the primary thing is that, you know, she wants her privacy protected. and i think that she's going to probably come out at some point and make a statement. >> privacy, of course, for all players involved is just a pipe dream at this point. and just how are they connected?

"the post" also reports that allen received at least one e-mail that talks about kelley from an unidentified account that was traced to none other than paula broadwell. well, there you have it. you're investigating this. i tried to explain this, and i'm trying not to be light-hearted, but there's such an aspect to this story rather well below the importance of the positions these men hold. one of them being, of course, our commander in afghanistan. the other one until recently head of the cia. this aspect to it, it's just -- well, i don't know what to say. i'm not used to covering these kinds of stories and wouldn't be if these weren't the people involved. your thoughts

connell and john boehner. can you help explain that? >> mitch mcconnell who runs the senate republican caucus, he's definitely playing the role of the bad cop in that he does not want to compromise at all on tax cuts, has taken a much more hard-line approach, has the bulk of his time talking to "the wall street journal" editorial page, basically speaking to the base. where you have speaker boehner talking in much more conciliatory tones and talking about getting a deal. i think that's going to be the dynamic. mitch mcconnell is up for re-election in 2014. in a very conservative state where it's not inconceivable the tea party would run somebody against him if he does not take a hard-line approach. people need to remember that as these negotiations unfold. for boehner, he wants a deal. i do want to comment a second on the interview you had with paul ryan. ryan might not think that there is a mandate, but the president does, congressional democrats do, and the public does, if you look at polling. and there's zero chance that the president is going to compromise on this, which is why i think there's

john torigoe has that story from california. >> i am currently in fighting training with the california conservation corps. hold it and just pull. there is an awful lot of training, so it's really good they're doing this especially for veterans because it can be hard sometimes to find good jobs. we played with the chain saw, just kind of get associated, a little more familiar with it. then we practiced laying hose from an engine, which we hadn't done yet, with actual water. >> that's what influences the land fires, right? >> since it's mostly veterans, it's really easy for a lot of us to just click and work together, so the teamwork thing fell into place very well. i was an aviation, hydraulics and air frame mechanic. i was at camp pendleton and we deployed to afghanistan in 2010. i know it was a really bloody summer while we were there. i saw a lot of bodies come back. >> my job was quarter master. we helped out with amphibious operations. i was so focused on the navy at one point in time, i never imagined myself being a firefighter. i never imagined myself going through the training.

, john boehner offered a compromise this week where he said yes, i am willing to put more revenue on the table but through closing deductions, ending loopholes, not through raising rates. can you accept a compromise as part of this whole deal that doesn't raise the bush tax rate on the wealthy? >> well, here is the issue. how much revenue are we going to generate part of a balanced package? i take my lead on this from simpson-bowles and their framework. in their framework, they assume the amount of revenue as if you started tax reform from a 3% rate. that is part -- 39% rate. that's part of their built-in assumption. i am all for doing tax reform. the issue is from what starting point. the simpson-bowles starting point which assumes the revenue from 39% is the right way to go to get the mix that they got in hitting their deficit reduction target. but look, if what the speaker boehner was saying is that he is truly willing to get what we consider congressional budget office revenue, we can work with one another. if what he is saying is what a lot of republicans used to say, which i
